Clinical Experience…
Shelley was raised in New Brunswick and recently returned home to Moncton after living and working almost 17 years in Alberta and 3 years in PEI. She has over 15 years of clinical experience working both in preschool and school settings and as a clinical team leader, mentoring other speech-language pathologists, speech language pathology assistants and graduate speech students.
Holistic Approach…
During her employment with a government agency, Shelley gained extensive experience working with children from ages 2 to 12 years, effectively diagnosing and providing intervention for various speech, language and communication disorders. She has also successfully teamed with parents and other professionals (teachers, audiologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, pediatricians, nurses, educational psychologists, etc.) to ensure her assessment and therapy goals are as holistic as possible.
Private Practice…
Shelley began doing private practice on a part-time basis in 2001 and that renewed her passion for her work as a speech language pathologist. She believes that working directly with children and their families, often in their home environment, can make a world of difference in being able to provide family- and client-centered service. Shelley has 2 children and this has given her a greater appreciation and understanding of the day-to-day joys and challenges that her clients experience.
Commitment to Learning and Mentoring…
The other part of the field of speech language pathology that Shelley loves is its commitment to continued research, professional development and best practice. In plain English, she continues to find excitement and inspiration in attending workshops and conferences that are presented by her creative and resourceful colleagues. Some of Shelley’s favorite experiences as an S-LP have been presenting as a guest lecturer at the University of Alberta and more recently at Holland College in Charlottetown.
Profession as a Passion…
Shelley is incredibly grateful to all of the children and families that she has had the privilege of working with to this point in her professional life – they have all contributed to her growth as a clinician and allowed her to do what she loves for a living.
